S. Korea’s population mobility rebounds in July

SEOUL, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) — South Korea’s population mobility rebounded last month on the back of higher housing transactions, statistical office data showed Wednesday.
The number of those who moved residence inside and outside the same province or city stood at 512,000 in July, up 6.2 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.
It turned around after retreating 7.1 percent in the previous month as higher housing transactions in May and June increased the number of residents moved last month.
The population mobility rate, which gauges the number of those relocating to different homes for every 100 people, gained 0.7 percentage points over the year to 11.8 percent in July.
The move of residence, however, had roughly been on a steady decline amid the aging population and high interest rates.
The central bank had left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.50 percent since January last year after hiking it by 3.0 percentage points in phases for the past one and a half years. ■
